Congratulations to Jason Valentine, VINSE Deputy Director and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who has been elected to the 2027 Fellow Class of the Optica Society. The society honors Jason for pioneering contributions to low-loss dielectric metasurfaces and meta-optics for image processing, and for sustained education in nanophotonics. The society’s board of directors selected him as one of 129 members from 26 countries. Fellows are Optica members who have served with distinction in advancing optics and photonics.
The Valentine Lab develops nanostructured optical metamaterial composites that let researchers engineer optical properties at will. They explore both metal-based (plasmonic) metasurfaces and low-loss, all-dielectric metasurfaces. At a fundamental level, it uses the design freedom of nanoscale structures to create and study optical properties not found in nature, such as negative and zero indices of refraction. In practical applications, the lab uses metamaterials to enable novel devices, including ultra-compact optical elements, optical information processors, and dynamically reconfigurable optics.
Optica, formerly the Optical Society of America, is the preeminent professional society in optics and photonics, with 22,000 members from 180 countries and 41 Nobel Laureates. Optica will honor the new fellows at conferences and events throughout 2027.
